I started 2016 with one goal - to discover myself as an artist. I made a promise that I would make a painting every day, even if it sucked, and so the project, 365 Squares, was born.
365 Squares has allowed me to meet and chronicle a consistent goal of finishing one painting every day. Even if everything else fell apart, if I put paintbrush to paper, I could count at least one success. It has only ever been about the process - never perfection. It’s been about exploration, determination, and about proving to myself that YES, I can do this.
I did put a few boundaries in place. Every painting must be 6x6, numbered, and posted on Instagram in chronological order. And I had to post it even if it sucked. That’s it. These “rules” have given me just enough direction to allow myself to freely create.
The journey has been equally enlightening and exhausting - but so worth it.
Above my workspace (aka kitchen table), I hung these words as a daily reminder:
“Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.” Vincent Van Gogh
In Summer 2015, Sperry commissioned KINGSPØKE to put together a 3-day creative retreat on the coast. We pushed them physically and mentally to fully engulf themselves in the spirit of "real" Maine. The adventure included a sail on a 20th century schooner, camping on a rugged island, kayaking in the Casco Bay, and then ended with a luxurious stay at a log home on Chebeague Island.
My role in the experience was to make a creative discovery journal among other items, as well as style certain aspects of the experience along the way.
GIFT BAG CREATION: To accompany Sperry executives on the trip, I put together a "go-bag" that included a creative discovery journal, custom tee and rashguard, an art kit, dry bag, and of course, a few bottles of rum.
FLAG DESIGN & CREATION: No true adventure is complete without a commemorative flag. Using iconic Sperry blue and white fabric, this double-sided flag features a hand-appliqued "s", contrasting border, and is tied to a piece of driftwood found on the shores of Maine.
MENU / NAPKIN DESIGN: After hand-carving a linoleum stamp, I block-printed white linen napkins with the Sperry logo. I also designed custom menus that featured the siping design on the bottom of every Sperry shoe.
KINGSPØKE DISPLAY WALL: To welcome Sperry to the KINGSPØKE office, I designed a display wall that featured the wave design on the sole of every Sperry shoe. The wall was painted Sperry blue and I attached found lobster rope in the shape of a wave. Below is a piece of Maine driftwood.
Paper Art Installation
Inspired by the popular Instagram hashtag, #nothingisordinary.
Over 500 Instagram photos were carefully curated and printed, then slowly and methodically folded and affixed to the wall.
ARTIST STATEMENT: To a child, a stick is anything but just a stick. It’s a spear. It’s a magic wand. A flagpole for the center of a sandcastle. Oftentimes, we lose that sense of wonder and seemingly mundane things lose their potential magic. As we grow, a stick eventually becomes just a stick again.
The popular Instagram hashtag #nothingisordinary, for me, is about regaining that childlike imagination; seeing the potential in what we once deemed ordinary. This installation is a tribute to that idea. To slowing down and celebrating the small things. Seeing the potential.
As KINGSPØKE members and our guests walk down the hallway they are reminded to slow down, look up and tap into the wonder they once felt as a child.
Journal Design & Map Illustration
Designed creative discovery journal for Sperry Top-Sider through KINGSPØKE. Included authentic Sperry shoelace tie closure, custom logo, pull-out hand-illustrated letterpressed map, sailcloth interior pockets, and creative writing prompts.
Portholes - A Creative Discovery Event
For KINGSPØKE's opening event in downtown Portland, Maine, we were inspired by community inclusiveness, collective creativity and most importantly, the idea of forging rich memories that would be shared again upon passing our high traffic windows.
Enter a few creative musters, hoops, beer, crafts, kids, paint, specialty cocktails and a few hundred friends from the local creative economy and Portholes was born.
The windows came together throughout the course of the night - as our guests finished their "portholes", photos were snapped of the individual hoops and their makers, then put up for display in our Monument Square windows. The installation remained up for one month as a tribute to Portland's growing and incredibly inspirational creative community.

"Bigger. Smaller. Funnier. is a year-long painting-a-day project that documents the internal and external ups and downs of our shared everyday experiences by exploring concepts such as purpose, love, faith, ego, relationships, sex, dependency, and genuine (but hard-earned) happiness. " - Scott Patt
Scott Patt, a long-time friend of KINGSPØKE and creative leader at Cole Haan, tasked our agency with putting together a book that documented Bigger. Smaller. Funnier.

When not working on client projects or chasing around my kids, painting florals is one of my favorite pastimes. Typically, I will start with a small pencil sketch, and then allow the painting to form organically.

76 Years of Memories
As a gift to my Dad on his 76th birthday, I put together a book filled with letters from loved ones. I emailed his friends, family, and even some old college buddies, and asked them to send a memory or funny story to be included in the book.
My Dad is a retired pilot, so I wanted the book to have a vintage airline feel. The color palette includes cream, brick red, and midnight blue. Elements throughout the book are vintage airmail graphics, worn paper textures, and tiny airplanes.
